Most crime stories tend to defy explanation for those of us that are prone to following the law and respecting others, but two attacks in Burien WA within 24 hours on Wednesday caught the attention of KVI's Kirby Wilbur and John Carlson.
"Really stunning and disheartening", Carlson started as he explained the attack on a Good Samaritan who was coming to the aid of what turned out to be a homeless man by two bullies.
"A 39-year-old man--a Good Samaritan--saw what was happening. Goes over and says 'hey you guys, leave that man alone'. They turn on this guy. One of them pulls out--not a knife, Kirby--but a machete."
The Good Samaritan is now hospitalized and in critical condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Both attack suspects have been arrested.
The other attack on Wednesday involves two men at gun point robbing a 13-year-old of a backpack. Those robbery suspects are still on the loose.
"Well Burien pops up a lot, John, in these stories lately about shootings and beatings and crime. What is going on down there?", asked Wilbur. "I mean the people of Burien tried to change things with this last election--had a slate of great candidates who would have changed things--but the (labor) union came in at the last minute," referring to the political financial battle between city council candidates back in November.
Wilbur wondered if the backpack robbery story could be gang related.
