U.S. Border Patrol agents stand guard over two dozen undocumented illegal immigrants caught shortly after they crossed the nearby Rio Grande River, which forms part of the U.S.-Mexico border. From 1980 to 2008, Border Patrol guarding the southern border apprehended a little more than 1 million illegal aliens annually. But in succeeding years, the number steadily dropped, and only 400,000 were apprehended in 2016. Officials attribute the shift to better border security, fewer opportunities for illegal aliens in the changing U.S. economy, and, after the 2016 election campaign, an enhanced perception among illegal aliens that they will not be welcomed here.
