WA Democrats bow to public pressure on 3% property tax hike bill

Washington Senate Chamber, Olympia, Wash.

Senate Democrats in the Olympia Legislature pulled the plug on a property tax bill increase that was proposed as an option for counties and cities to raise taxes to pay for police or fire fighters.

Political watchdogs like KVI morning show host John Carlson are calling the decision by Democrats to drop SB 5770 a victory for taxpayers.

Carlson says KVI listeners and other voters have spoken out via the Legislative feedback hotline in the last few days which delivered a message of opposition to the majority Democrats in Olympia. Voters are telling Washington elected officials at the local and state level that police and fire departments should be funded with existing money rather than raising taxes higher–especially on property taxes–which will directly increase the cost of rent and mortgage for the cost of living.

Senate Democrats decided to drop their version of the bill, SB 5770, which would have allowed for cities and counties to raise property tax rates by 3% a year which would have nullified a voter-approved statewide initiative, I-747, which passed with 56.5% of the vote in 2001.
