A trans athlete in a high school girls basketball game between Tumwater High School and Shelton High School now appears to be an early test case for a ban on trans athletes in girls and women’s sports ordered by President Donald Trump.
On February 5th, 2025, Trump signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports”.
The U.S. Department of Education office in Seattle is now investigating what happened when a Tumwater HS student refused to play in the girls’ basketball game against Shelton HS because Shelton had a trans player on the team.

KVI morning host John Carlson told listeners, “So basically this 15-year-old…refused to play–that’s an act of courage right there–and she made it clear why. And when they (the school district said) ‘how dare you misgender this…young trans woman’ she said, ‘Okay, I’ll see you in court. You’re the one breaking the law. Not me. You’re the one who’s wrong. Not me’. So she’s standing her ground. Good for her. ”
